SIPCHEM INNOVENT SA PRESENTS MERAS® R-PET AT K 2025
Driving Circularity and Innovation in the Plastics Industry
By transforming post-consumer plastics into versatile, high-performance materials, Meras® r-PET demonstrates how sustainability and functionality can go hand in hand. Its development reflects a broader effort to integrate circular economy principles into the plastics industry, addressing both environmental challenges and the demand for technically advanced materials. Insights into its composition, technical performance, environmental benefits, and wide range of potential applications reveal the growing role of circular solutions in shaping the future of modern industries and supporting a transition toward more sustainable production and consumption practices.

The Creation of Sipchem InnoVent SA
Sipchem Group, founded in 1999 and now a leading global petrochemical company, has consistently invested in future-oriented solutions for sustainable growth. To accelerate this ambition, Sipchem Group established Sipchem InnoVent SA, its Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) and Open Innovation arm. Sipchem InnoVent SA was created to identify, invest in, and develop breakthrough technologies and business models that support sustainability, circular economy, and the energy transition. It partners with startups and innovators to drive technology transfer, create value across industries, and secure the Sipchem Group’s role in addressing global challenges such as decarbonization, digitalization, and circularity.

From Innovation to Market: Introducing Meras®
One of the first successes of Sipchem InnoVent SA’s open innovation program is Meras®, a proprietary range of high-performance r-PET compounds designed to meet the growing demand for sustainable materials in consumer goods, automotive, and industrial markets.
Every Meras® compound begins its life as something familiar: a used PET bottle. Instead of ending up as litter or landfill, these bottles are collected through established recycling streams, helping to reduce waste in our streets, oceans, and communities. Once gathered, they undergo a meticulous transformation : first sorted to remove labels and contaminants, then thoroughly washed to restore purity. From there, Sipchem InnoVent SA applies its own upcycling technology, turning what was once single-use plastic into high-performance Meras® r-PET compounds. The result is more than just recycling, it is a second life for plastics. Because Sipchem InnoVent SA considers the global impact on the environment, safety, and health, Meras® has been developed without PFAS, BPA, styrene, and halogen, ensuring sustainability without compromise on human and environmental safety. “Finally, after 3 years of development efforts, we are proud to present Meras® r-PET portfolio to the industry.” By Thierry Arpin, Technical Director of Sipchem InnoVent SA. Meras® r-PET is based on 100% postconsumer PET waste and offers a readyto-use alternative to prime plastics such as ABS, PC, PBT, PET, or PA. It is engineered for injection moulding applications and combines sustainability with technical performance.
Technical Highlights of Meras®
-Recycled Content: up to 90% (depending on grade)
-Carbon Footprint Reduction: up to 80% lower vs. prime PET (assessed by Carbon Minds, ISO 14067:2018 & Together for Sustainability (TfS) Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Guideline)
-Grades available: unreinforced, glass-reinforced, and flame-retardant formulations
-Performance: tensile modulus up to 10,000 MPa, stress at break up to 140 MPa
-Safety: food-grade compliant, PFAS-free, BPA-free, styrene-free, and halogen-free
This detailed product data demonstrates the versatility and performance of Meras® compounds, confirming their ability to replace prime plastics in demanding applications.
Conducting a Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) study requires reliable data to produce accurate and meaningful results—especially when recycled compounds are involved. This makes strong expertise essential, both to ensure credibility and to communicate the outcomes clearly and with confidence. Ultimately, the challenge was that without the right data, expertise, and communication, the study could not be carried out with full confidence and credibility.
To overcome these challenges, we mandated a third party, who conducted the cradle-to-gate Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) study for two of our MERAS r-PET products – the unreinforced and the glass-reinforced thermoplastic compounds. The study followed internationally recognized standards, including ISO 14067:2018 and the Together for Sustainability (TfS) PCF Guideline, ensuring methodological consistency and credibility.
The results provide a robust baseline to track progress, identify opportunities for emission reductions, and support our customers and partners in achieving their own climate goals. By embedding carbon footprint into product evaluation, we not only enhance transparency but also reinforce Sipchem InnoVent’s commitment to enabling low-carbon solutions and accelerating the industry’s transition toward a more sustainable future.

Value Proposition
-Circularity: traceable r-PET sourcing, locally sourced for the region.
-Sustainability: significantly reduced carbon footprint thanks to mechanical recycling and Post Consumer Recycled feedstock, supporting customers’ ESG and climate targets by offering an alternative and a competitive offer to “prime” plastics such as ABS, PC, PBT, PET or PA for which waste collection and therefore PCR does not exist at large scale.
-Performance: technical properties comparable to prime plastics (polymer produced by standard polymerization unit)
-Targeting: suitable for automotive (boxes, electrical components, brackets), industrial applications (automation, electrical boxes, dispensers), consumer goods (appliances, cosmetics, packaging), and more
-Convenient implementation: “ready-to-use” compounds on conventional equipment with complete technical documentation and customer support
Regional Production, Global Reach
Sipchem InnoVent SA manages all proprietary formulations, intellectual property, and product certifications for Meras®. Production is carried out under license with long term partners to ensure regional sourcing and manufacturing close to customers:
-EMEA: sourcing in Eastern Europe, production in Italy by COSSA Polimeri S.r.l.
-Asia Pacific: local sourcing and production in Thailand to launch in 2026
-Americas: local sourcing and production to launch in 2027
