As increasingly complex polymer formulations and multilayer structures place greater demands on tooling, cleaning methods must preserve precision while keeping downtime under control. Thermal Cleanings Technology addresses this challenge with an approach designed specifically for the cleaning and maintenance of extrusion tooling.

In today’s highly demanding plastics processing sector, the extrusion of multilayer barrier films, engineering polymers, and high-density packaging materials requires uncompromising operational efficiency and flawless melt quality. Extrusion dies, breaker plates, feedblocks, and melt pumps operate under continuous thermal and shear stress.

Over extended production runs, polymers such as EVOH, Polyamide (PA), Polypropylene (PP), and Polyethylene (PE) undergo local thermal degradation, leaving oxidized carbonized deposits that clog microscopic melt channels and degrade end-product clarity. Maintaining these complex extrusion tools has historically relied on mechanical scraping, brass brushing, or harsh chemical baths. However, mechanical intervention inevitably introduces micro-abrasions, rounds off sharp die lips, and distorts the crucial geometrical tolerances required for uniform gauge control.

On the other hand, chemical solvent cleaning presents severe occupational safety hazards, hazardous waste disposal overheads, and inconsistent cleaning efficiency in internal flow passages. To overcome these operational limitations, forward-thinking extrusion plants are adopting advanced vacuumbased pyrolysis technology. Unlike traditional burn-off ovens or direct thermal systems, vacuum pyrolysis operates in a sealed, oxygen-deprived environment under negative pressure. By precisely controlling the process chamber within a targeted temperature range of 380°C to 430°C, high-molecular-weight polymers are gently decomposed into gaseous volatile organic compounds without combustion, flame contact, or local thermal stress.

A core technical differentiator of vacuum based pyrolysis is the total elimination of oxygen during the heating phase. Oxygen-deprived thermal decomposition completely prevents metal oxidation, surface scaling, and hardness loss on high-alloy steel tooling. Furthermore, PID-controlled heating profiles ensure gradual, uniform thermal distribution across massive flat film dies and intricate spin packs, eliminating micro-cracking and dimensional warping caused by rapid thermal shock. Environmental compliance and workplace safety remain paramount in modern European manufacturing facilities.

Vacuum pyrolytic cleaning systems eliminate the need for highenergy thermal afterburners by integrating advanced multi-stage exhaust treatment. Thermal vapors generated during decomposition pass through an active water scrubbing stage combined with high-capacity activated carbon filtration. This closed-loop condensation and scrubbing process safely captures volatile hydrocarbons and neutralizes odor, delivering fully eco-friendly, clean, and smoke-free operation that complies with strict EU emission regulations. From a maintenance perspective, transitioning to automated vacuum pyrolysis transforms line turnaround procedures from a labor-intensive bottleneck into a standardized, repeatable process.

Operators simply place contaminated tooling assemblies into the chamber, select the preprogrammed cycle based on polymer type, and initiate the automated run. Once completed, volatile gases have been safely evacuated and filtered, leaving only a fine, non-adherent inorganic carbon residue on the metal surfaces. This residual ash is easily washed away with a low-pressure water rinse, restoring the tooling to micro-clean condition ready for immediate reassembly. By eliminating hours of manual maintenance labor and preventing microabrasive wear on precision surfaces, vacuum pyrolysis significantly extends tooling service life, reduces scrap rates during line restarts, and minimizes unscheduled downtime across film and profile extrusion operations.
