MEDITERRANEA DI NAVIGAZIONE: RELIABILITY AND INNOVATION ACROSS GLOBAL TRADE ROUTES
With roots deeply anchored in Italy’s maritime tradition, Mediterranea di Navigazione has evolved into a solid and trusted presence in the international shipping arena. From its headquarters in Ravenna, the privately owned company manages a fleet of modern chemical tankers operating on global routes, alongside a bitumen and gas carrier dedicated to the Mediterranean basin. Built on a foundation of operational excellence, Mediterranea di Navigazione combines technical proficiency with a strong commitment to its customers. Guided by uncompromising standards of safety, quality, and environmental responsibility, the company continues to support key players in the chemical and energy industries, delivering reliability at sea for over a century.

Founded in 1908 in the historic port city of Ravenna, Mediterranea di Navigazione has been a cornerstone of Italian maritime heritage for more than a century. Its first routes connected Ravenna, Cherso, Fiume, and Trieste, carrying both passengers and cargo aboard vessels proudly named Ravenna, Candiano, and Romagna. The latter, Romagna, marked a turning point in global shipping history: it was the first vessel in Europe—and probably in the world—to transition from steam to diesel propulsion, powered by an advanced Sulzer marine engine from Switzerland. This pioneering spirit has defined the company’s DNA ever since. Throughout the decades, Mediterranea di Navigazione has continuously evolved, maintaining its core values of reliability, integrity, and long- term vision. From early timber trade operations between Yugoslavia and Italy to today’s management of highly qualified chemical tankers ranging from 5,000 to 27,000 DWT, the company has consistently demonstrated adaptability and technical excellence.
Today, Mediterranea di Navigazione operates four chemical tankers trading worldwide, as well as a bitumen and gas carrier serving the Mediterranean region. This diversified fleet structure reflects the company’s strategic flexibility and its ability to meet the needs of a global clientele in the chemical, energy, and industrial sectors.
Headquartered in Ravenna, the operational and commercial office manages all aspects of fleet performance and client relations, ensuring efficiency and precision in every voyage. The company’s enduring success is rooted in its continuity of leadership and unwavering commitment to quality, traits that have allowed it to thrive across generations and market cycles.
At the heart of Mediterranea di Navigazione’s philosophy lie Safety, Quality, and Environmental Protection—pillars that guide every operational decision. The company has long recognized that true competitiveness stems from trust, and trust can only be earned through consistency, transparency, and results. To that end, Mediterranea has established long-term partnerships with charterers, industrial clients, and trading companies worldwide, offering tailor-made shipping solutions supported by a culture of professionalism and care. Each vessel in the fleet reflects the company’s pursuit of technological excellence and environmental responsibility. Advanced safety systems, rigorous maintenance protocols, and continuous crew training programs ensure the highest operational standards. Moreover, the company invests in energy efficiency and emission reduction technologies, aligning with the International Maritime Organization’s decarbonization goals and the expectations of global partners.

As international trade routes expand between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, Mediterranea di Navigazione stands as a trusted bridge between continents, combining Italian maritime tradition with a forward-looking vision. The company’s operational discipline and culture of innovation position it as a reliable partner for long-term collaboration in the evolving global energy and chemical transport sectors. More than a century after its founding, Mediterranea di Navigazione remains driven by the same principle that inspired its early pioneers: to serve the sea with excellence, safety, and respect for the environment. Today, this legacy continues—anchored in tradition, powered by innovation, and open to the future.
