The excellence of hardening in UFS threading tools: INNOVATION, PRECISION, AND SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE

Your Challenge: Maximizing the performance of threading tools. Our Solution: UFS develops hardening for superior performance.

Maximizing the performance of threading tools is a crucial challenge for any manufacturing process. UFS has developed an advanced heat treatment process to ensure high-quality, wear-resistant tools with exceptional performance across a variety of industrial applications.

Hardening: The Heart of Threading Tool Quality
Heat treatment is essential for increasing the hardness and resistance to thermal and mechanical shocks of threading tools. Hardening involves heating the material to a high temperature and rapidly cooling it, which transforms the crystalline structure to achieve the desired properties. Temperature control, dwell time, and tempering are key factors in ensuring an optimal balance between hardness and toughness.

Critical Factors in Heat Treatment
Let’s delve deeper into the main factors that influence the outcome of heat treatment for threading tools.
•Treatment Temperature: A determining parameter for hardness and shock resistance.
•Dwell Time at Temperature: Impacts carbide formation and internal stresses.
•Tempering: Stabilizes the material’s structure, improving shock resistance without compromising hardness.

UFS uses vacuum furnaces with computerized control to ensure uniform and repeatable heat treatments. This approach avoids contamination and minimizes deformation, ensuring tools with superior hardness and wear resistance.

Case Study: Hardening Developed for a Client with Specific Needs
Recently, UFS collaborated with a client who had particular requirements regarding the performance of their threading tools. In this case, the goal was to develop tools with optimized mechanical properties for a specific application, where wear resistance and durability were crucial. As a result, UFS proposed two different hardening cycles, intending to assess which treatment would provide the best result.

•DIS-1 (AT1): Treatment according to UFS standards.

•DIS-2 (AT2): Treatment with a non-standard temperature profile designed to maximize wear resistance.

The metallographic analysis revealed that the DIS-2 sample had a lower surface hardness and a more grouped distribution of carbides, ensuring a significantly longer operational life compared to the standard treatment.

The following graph illustrates the performance comparison between the two treatments, highlighting a significant increase in the tool’s lifespan when treated with the customized cycle (DIS2) versus the standard cycle (DIS-1).

Metallography: The Essential Tool for Optimizing Hardening Metallographic analysis is a fundamental component in fully understanding the effectiveness of heat treatment. Metallography allows us to observe the material’s microstructure and analyze the distribution of various components, such as carbides, residual austenite and martensite. Through these analyses, we can understand how hardening has influenced the mechanical properties of the tool, including hardness, shock resistance, and wear resistance. Additionally, metallography helps identify potential defects or inconsistencies in the treatment, such as the presence of unwanted phases or the formation of surface cracks that could compromise the tool’s performance.
