QUALITY CONTROL IN FOOD PACKAGING: THE REVOLUTION IS MADE IN ITALY

One of the most remarkable success stories in the field of advanced technologies for the safety and quality of packaged food is that of Rayonics International, a company that has turned
decades of experimentation into tangible innovations, applying X-ray imaging techniques to food quality control. What began as an ambitious research effort has now evolved into a global benchmark, integrating artificial intelligence and pioneering digital solutions to refine the detection and analysis of food products.

This transformation is not just about technological advancement—it also reflects a broader commitment to consumer safety, regulatory compliance, and industrial efficiency. In an era where food security concerns are growing, companies like Rayonics play a crucial role in ensuring that products reaching our tables meet the highest standards.

So how has this revolution unfolded, and what makes the Turin district such a dynamic hub for innovation in food quality control?
In this article, you’ll learn about the journey of Rayonics International, the evolution of X-ray inspection technologies, and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in this ever- evolving sector.

Advanced technologies for inspecting food products have been developed in the Turin district. Rayonics CEO explains how experimentation has allowed the application of X-ray image processing. People often believe that major innovations come to Italy from overseas, underestimating the groundbreaking advancements in experimental districts like Turin. With particular local excellences and a strong focus on educational and university research, this area has become a genuine hub of innovation. This context certainly includes Rayonics International, located in an industrial area in La Loggia, on the outskirts of Turin, specializing in X-ray quality control for food inspection.

Everything began in 1986, when a request from a German plant of a major national confectionery industry led the Turin company to experiment for the first time in the food industry with innovative image processing techniques applied to X-rays. From this point, a stream of experimentation for food quality control was initiated, which, thirty years later, sees a growing global demand and necessity to innovate both products and services.

Rayonics, composed of a development  team with significant experience in this application sector, has continued its innovative journey by recently introducing AI solutions that make these experiential technologies increasingly effective, significantly reducing some complexities in use and production setup. Primarily engaged alongside clients in the canning industry and more broadly in the food sector, we have come to realize that our clients, through our systems and services, are tasked with ensuring quality and safety for the end consumer; this brings additional responsibility, pushing us to continuously improve, embrace new challenges, and propose new digital innovation solutions.

With our products and through a network of partners, we ensure widespread service availability for users, even in territories outside the European community. With exports accounting for 70% of our revenue, we are notably present and active in Turkey and the Indian continent.

The journey of Rayonics International is a testament to how Italian ingenuity and continuous innovation can shape the future of food safety on a global scale. As the demand for higher food quality and safety continues to grow worldwide, Rayonics stands at the forefront, proving that the revolution in quality control is indeed Made in Italy. With a strong commitment to research, global expansion, and unwavering dedication to consumer protection, the company is poised to lead the next wave of advancements in food packaging inspection.
